How Vehicle Safety Is Changing for Drivers in the UAE 2026: A Beginner’s Guide to Smarter, Safer Roads

I recently came across a post criticizing the UAE’s used car market, and I now fully agree, despite having had positive experiences in 2016 and 2020. Here’s what happened to me recently, in hopes that it helps others avoid similar issues:

I was on the lookout for a sporty car, specifically a Subaru BRZ (2022+). I found a black 2023 BRZ on Facebook priced below market value, supposedly due to a minor bumper repair at the agency. At first, the car appeared fine, complete with agency receipts and a full-service history. However, I noticed poorly spray-painted rims and a missed scheduled service in December 2024, despite having an active service contract.

Unfortunately, UAE-based VIN search tools (like the MOI portal) do not provide records of accidents in Dubai. Therefore, I arranged an inspection with Autohub, where they quickly uncovered repaired damage in the engine compartment. They confirmed that the vehicle had sustained major accident damage and had been auctioned previously. In my case, a simple Google search of the VIN would have revealed this information immediately. It turned out that the car had been in a major accident and auctioned in November/December 2024.

In another instance, I looked at a fairly priced 2022 German sports car with just 22,000 km on the odometer. The owner claimed the car was agency-maintained with no issues, even though the warranty had expired. When I inquired about extending the warranty, the agency warned me of significant problems discovered during the last two service visits and advised me to request the complete service history.

Key lessons learned:

  • Always Google the VIN and use UAE-based tools.
  • Walk away immediately if anything seems questionable.
  • Request an RTA Vehicle Status Certificate from the owner (around AED 120; it’s worth the cost).
  • For nearly new cars, obtain agency-confirmed service histories before inspection.

Lastly, is there an online tool like MOI or EVG specifically for checking accident history for Dubai-registered cars?
